In a leather-backed, blue cloth-covered slipcase, with a blue cloth-covered, wraparound chemise, the spine of the slipcase features five raised bands, gilt-lettered title, translator's name: MACHEN, and the 1886 date. A copy which shows early restoration and rebinding, using a white cloth spine, over the four raised bands, a simple gilt-lettered title: THE HEPTAMERON, and gray paper-covered boards, with the top-edge trimmed and gilt, headbands later, cream paper endpapers, and flyleaves. Size of binding: 6 inches x 8 7/8 in., frontisipiece portrait of Marguerite of Navarre title-page contents translator's preface (by Arthur Machen) xviii, -392 pp., with the frontispiece, and eight inserted etchings by Leopold Flameng (1831-1911), these are printed on a thicker paper.
